Pediatric heel pain in Albany NY

Family foot care in Albany NY

Family foot care in Albany NY

Heel pain is not just a concern for adults. Children get it, too. And when it happens, it means that there is an underlying condition that needs to be diagnosed and treated. Here at Albany Podiatry, we’re dedicated to helping your child to be pain-free with our family foot care in Albany NY.

It may seem as if heel pain is heel pain, no matter what your age. But the truth is that pediatric heel pain is different. While adults typically experience it due to plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, or both; your child suffers heal pain in many cases because of the fact that her or his feet are still growing, and the heel bone does not become fully developed until at least the age of 14. New bone is continuing to grow leading up that time, and the growth plate is subject to the effects of stress put on it. There is another major distinction to be made between heel pain in adults and children. With you, the likelihood is that your pain will be at its worst when waking up or having been in a stationary position for a long time. As you walk around, your heel improves somewhat. This is not the case with your child. He or she will find that the pain usually worsens by walking around. There are certain conditions that are associated with pediatric heel pain. These include calcaneal apophystis, which is inflammation in the growth plate as the result of muscle strain and repetitive stress; tendo-achilles bursitis, referring to inflammation of the fluid-filled sac between the achilles tendon and the heel bone; overuse syndromes; and fractures. Among the treatments that our family foot care in Albany NY can offer are medication, orthotics, physical therapy, and surgery.

Don’t hesitate to contact us. Waiting for pediatric heel pain to go away on its own is not a good strategy. You need the help of our family foot care in Albany NY.

If you are experiencing foot pain, you will want to come to our podiatry practice, Albany Podiatry. At our 12203 podiatry office, you can be treated with laser treatment for your heel pain, and other painful foot problems.

At our 12203 podiatry office you will be seen by one of our expert foot doctors, just one of whom is Dr. Mark Friedman. Heel pain in is a very common reason for patients to visit our office; it is usually caused by plantar fasciitis, a condition that is also referred to as heel spur syndrome. Heel pain can also be caused by other reasons such as a stress fracture, tendinitis, arthritis, nerve irritation, or sometimes even by a cyst. Our podiatrist will be able to accurately diagnose the cause of your heel pain so that it can be properly treated. When you have plantar fasciitis, you have an inflammation of the band of tissues that connect the heel to the toes. In this condition, the fascia becomes irritated and inflamed, causing heel pain. At our podiatry practice we offer treatment with the MLS robotic laser for heel pain. Our doctors and technicians are certified in Advanced MLS Laser Therapy, and we use customized treatment protocols which are unique to each patient. This shockwave treatment has been cleared by the FDA; over 90% of people experience relief from this treatment. MLS robotic laser therapy can be used to effectively treat plantar fasciitis as well as other conditions which include: bunions; peripheral neuropathy; ankle, heel, and joint pain; Achilles tendinitis; neuromas; arthritis; bone spurs; sports injuries; and other strains and injuries. Shockwave therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to treat painful foot conditions. The light energy enters the damaged cells and stimulates inter-cellular activity. This treatment reduces local pain and makes recovery of the damaged cells to occur even quicker. When the cells recover, the healing process is complete. Treatment is completely painless and lasts about 10 minutes.

Treating Hammertoes in Albany

Albany foot doctor

Albany foot doctor

Just as you would seek out a specialist if you had a problem with your back or with your digestive system, you should be seen by our Albany foot doctor if you have a hammertoe. Here at Albany Podiatry, you can feel 100% confident that you are being treated by a podiatrist who is highly skilled and has the experience to diagnose and treat you effectively. Hammertoe doesn’t always cause pain, but that is the case the majority of the time. And when that pain becomes severe, it has a way of negatively affecting your entire life. Relief begins with a phone call to our office.

What exactly is a hammertoe and what causes one to form? The definition of hammertoe is a toe that becomes stuck in the flexed or bent position. This happens due to excessive pressure that is put on the tendons of the toe’s joints and this is the reason why it remains in that flexed state. The most common reason for hammertoe is ill-fitting footwear, especially when those shoes are too tight around your toes. Women’s high heels, in particular, are major culprits in the formation and progressing of hammertoe. Other things that can be at the root of the problem are genetic predisposition, and arthritis. Our Albany foot doctor will ask you questions and take a medical history as part of the exam in order to get down to the reasons why you’re suffering from hammertoe.

The exam will include a physical check of the toe in question and probably x-rays. There are two types of hammertoe: flexible and rigid. Flexible have some motion left available to them, while rigid are totally locked into position. Depending on which one you are diagnosed with, the treatment can vary from something a simple as a shoe insert (orthotic) to reduce the undue pressure on your toe joint, allowing it to heal naturally; to surgery in the worst case scenarios of rigid hammertoe. Other treatments can include medication to manage swelling and inflammation or cortisone shots for more severe pain. What is most important is to not ignore the situation. Our Albany foot doctor doesn’t want you to let the situation grow worse.

Comprehensive Foot Examination in Albany

Albany Foot Doctor

Albany Foot Doctor

If you have diabetes you will want to visit our foot care practice for comprehensive foot exams on a periodic basis. At our Albany Podiatry, our Albany foot doctor, Dr. Steven Lund or Dr. Leslie Rousseau, can provide you with the extra care that you need in the form of a comprehensive foot exam should you have diabetes.

When you have diabetes it is generally recommended that you have an examination of your feet on a yearly basis. Our Albany foot doctor will also educate you about certain aspects of your foot health as it relates to diabetes. Many times people who have diabetes have experienced nerve damage on their feet, and may have poor blood circulation in their feet, as well. This makes it difficult for them to fight foot infections, and can make foot problems develop serious complications for patients with diabetes. When you have a comprehensive foot exam, our podiatrist will help you identify any changes that are occurring in your feet so that you can prevent future foot problems and reduce the risk of ever needing a foot amputation. Diabetic neuropathy is a common foot problem of diabetics. This causes a decrease in the feeling of pain in the feet. Diabetic vasculopathy can cause feet to narrow and reduce blood flow to the feet, as well. As your feet receive less nutrients from the blood and oxygen, the bones and joints of the feet can weaken, and cause the foot to flatten or cause toes to curl. This can create certain pressure areas within your feet that can cause your skin to break down and diabetic ulcers will form. It has been reported that foot amputations are 10 times higher in people with diabetes, but these rates can be decreased by up to 85% when the patient has a comprehensive foot care program.

Heel pain in Albany

Albany podiatrist

Walking or even standing can be difficult when you are experiencing heel pain. It can interfere with your ability to work and to go about your normal daily life. Here at Albany Podiatrist, you will be diagnosed, evaluated, and treated using the most effective, safe, and quick methods available.

The two most common causes of heel pain are plantar fasciitis and heel spurs. When the tissue connecting your heel bone to your toes becomes strained, this is the condition called plantar fasciitis. In addition to the strain, small tears can appear. Being on your feet too much, poor-fitting shoes, flat fee, high arches, being overweight, and feet that roll inward when you walk are the major risk factors. Heel spurs are deposits of calcium. They form on the underside of your heel bone as the result of muscle or ligament strain. The causes are virtually identical as those for plantar fasciitis, although diabetes can also be associated with heel spurs. Our Albany podiatrist will do a through examination and may also order x-rays. This will allow for a definitive diagnosis. Some of the symptoms related to heel pain include swelling, irritation, and inflammation. Treatments from our Albany podiatrist vary depending on severity and whether the issue is plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, or both. Switching to more comfortable shoes and/or wearing orthotics (shoe inserts) are two very popular and efficient ways to address heel pain. Stretching exercises and physical therapy may also by helpful. Surgery is not typically required, unless the heel pain persists and non-invasive methods are not producing the desired results. If necessary, you can depend on surgery being done with the utmost of expertise and experience as you would expect from a foot specialist.

Call our office to schedule an appointment so that our Albany podiatrist can do a checkup and help you with your heel pain.
